Why choose Pilates taught by a physiotherapist?

Pilates is a form of exercise designed to increase your postural strength, core control, and flexibility. Our Physiotherapists have an expertise in treating back and sports injuries and are therefore ideally suited to develop a program which will specifically target your areas of weakness/ instability or inflexibility.  We are able to understand the reasons that various exercises may cause strain/ pain or discomfort and adjust them accordingly.

The history of Pilates:

Pilates was initially designed by a German by the name of Joseph Pilates.  As a child Joseph suffered from multiple illnesses but was helped to overcome these through various forms of exercise including exercise regimes of the ancient Greeks and Romans, yoga and Zen meditation.  During an internment in England throughout the First World War Joseph started to develop a series of bed based exercises to improve the health of inmates suffering from influenza and other ailments with good effect.  He added to his exercise repertoire by adding in resistance by one of the few means available to him - bed springs. These were the early beginnings of the Pilates Equipment we see today.

Following the war Joseph moved to the United States where he set up a studio in New York.  Here he included many of the Nework Ballet ballerinas amongst his many clients.  From this studio his concepts have been adapted and you can now see the equipment and exercises he designed being used world wide.

Joseph Pilates Philosophy:

Joseph believed in strengthening the deep abdominal and postural muscles to protect the spine and keep the body balanced.  He endorsed mind-body control, enhancing breathing techniques and alignment of the spine.  The Pilates technique is based around eight principles;

  Breathing      Concentration      Control      Centering

  Precision      Flow      Integrated Isolation      Routine

Pilates today has evolved. Developments in research and exercise ideals have enabled the modification of Joseph's original concepts to enable the more specific strengthening and safe practice for those with injuries.   Modified Pilates exercises have been specifically designed by physiotherapists for the use of Pilates in the rehabilitation setting.
